When it comes to drawing, I'm usually scatter-brained with so many ideas. So here lately, I haven't had that push to draw anything. I just felt like I needed a new challenge, something different. Something that would just push me into going crazy with drawing again and showing my love for cartoons once more.
This semester in Drawing, we are doing instillation projects. I wasn't too sure about this project when I first heard about it. I had a really hard time coming up with an idea that would work for this sort of project. We had to chose an old piece of artwork and create a new installation project out of it. I kept thinking how I could combine some of my past artwork that I was proud of, and enjoyed creating, into an installation that others would enjoy and somehow interact with. I really felt like I was going to give up half way through the project when nothing I came up with was working out so well. Then talking to Amy, we finally numbed down on something simple, but interesting.
My idea was to make an installation that others could interact with, and enjoy. I'm majoring in drawing to be a cartoonist/illustrator for children's books. The idea I finally decided on was to make my space of wall look as if to be a giant coloring page, and would let viewers color the white uncolored space. I also wanted to have a point behind my idea, not just for others to color on the wall, but with combining my love for cartoons and still being a child at heart.
My point behind the installation was to let even the oldest of person seem like a little child coloring on the wall, even when our parents taught us not to. It was to let them see a huge coloring book the way a little child would. The size of the coloring page from the angle I made it made you seem smaller than you actually were. Bringing it to the floor at the angle I made gave it a semi 3D look when standing infront of it.
I made it into a doctors office view because of the old art I chose. The old art i chose was old prints from print making with brains, hands, and eyes with pencils shoved in them to show my imagination upon the inside of an artist. Also because I love using pencils.
I'm really proud of my piece because it really captured the attention of others, and everyone seemed to get the idea behind it just by looking at it. The one thing I wish I would've done was add some scribbles or color to it so people would know it was ok to color on and not be scared to "mess it up".
